ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with a member of the local Venezuelan community about her reaction to the capture of Nicolás Maduro. Lisheiry Mora, who left Venezuela nearly a decade ago, expressed hope that she might one day return to see her family.
“My phone rang, to be exact, at 1:05 at dawn,” Mora said. “It was my godfather. And he told me– well I told him, ‘What happened? Did something happen?’ And he said, ‘Daughter,’ with that tone, he said, ‘Daughter, turn on the news! We don’t know what’s happening but the power went out.’ And then I heard something like whoosh and then boom.”
Mora said she immediately started calling her family, including her sisters, nephew, and mother. When the news of Maduro’s capture was confirmed, she initially wanted to celebrate.
“Here in the city, everything’s the same with all the fear. For example, on the 4th, we really wanted to do something like what they were doing down in Florida,” Mora said.
However, Mora and others in the community are afraid to celebrate in public due to fear of an ICE raid. “We have a little light at the end of the tunnel. But we also have a lot of fear. For example, I’m here under asylum and relatively legal because I have all my paperwork,” she said.
Mora worries that her asylum status may change now that Venezuela is no longer under dictatorship. She said it’s a concern shared by others in the Venezuelan community in Rochester.
“We want to cheer up. We want the power to express the negative things we feel too, but we’re afraid,” Mora said.
Many celebrated the capture in their homes, she said, but they are now wondering what comes next. “We have a lot of uncertainty. We don’t know how fast Edmundo Gonzales will be placed as President, but he has always said he is the candidate who won the votes and to save our hope,” Mora said.
“I mean millions of Venezuelans have hope that we can go back, with freedom, to our country,” Mora said.
Mora’s youngest child, who is 5, has only met her family through phone calls. Amid the anxiety and uncertainty, she hopes to change that in the future.
