ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Governor Kathy Hochul proposed new safety restrictions for children on social media as part of her first legislative proposal for this year’s budget.
Hochul’s proposal would require social media companies to expand age verification, set children’s privacy settings to the highest by default, and disable some AI chatbot features on kids’ accounts. Additionally, parents would have the ability to limit their children’s financial transactions over social media.
“As a mom, we want our children to grow up as kids. Not scrolling, not comparing, or feeling pressured to the addictive social media feeds designed to keep them hooked. We’re facing a mental health crisis among our children. And doing nothing about it is not an option, said Kate Chudoba, a concerned parent.
Hochul also proposed expanding resources to train every 10th grader in New York in teen mental health first aid, enabling them to support their peers.
