We look ahead to Tuesday’s Premier League game at London Stadium between West Ham United and Nottingham Forest with our prediction and preview.
West Ham vs Nottingham Forest: The Key Stats
West Ham defeated Nottingham Forest in 39.1% of the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 pre-game simulations of this match. West Ham are winless in their last nine Premier League games (D4 L5), giving Wolves their first league win of the season last time out. The Hammers last had a longer run without a win in the competition between December 2006 and March 2007 (11 games). Nottingham Forest have lost their last four Premier League games. They last lost five in a row between August/October 2022, while manager Sean Dyche has never lost five consecutively in the same campaign before. With West Ham United in 18th and Nottingham Forest in 17th, separated by just four points in the Premier League table, this is undoubtedly both sides’ most important match of the season so far.
Last matchday, in Saturday’s early kick-off, Forest suffered a fourth consecutive league defeat, despite frustrating Aston Villa for long periods at Villa Park. Head coach Sean Dyche later lamented the individual errors that contributed to each of the three goals his side conceded.
West Ham, kicking off later at 3pm, had an opportunity to reduce the gap to Forest to a single point. Their task was to secure an away victory against a Wolverhampton Wanderers side that had gone 23 Premier League matches without a win.
Instead, the Hammers endured their worst performance of the campaign, slumping to a demoralising 3-0 defeat at Molineux that handed Wolves their first league win of the season.
“Nobody expected us to play so bad,” head coach Nuno Espírito Santo said after the defeat.
“Now is the moment for us to reflect and think, are we doing everything we can? Do we realise the situation we are in? And how to get out of this situation and improve. There are things that need to be addressed.”
What needs to be addressed first is his team’s defence. They have now conceded 41 goals in the Premier League this season, the most of any side. The last time they’d conceded more goals by this stage of a top-flight campaign was all the way back in 1965-66 (44).
It was also the club’s ninth consecutive Premier League game without victory, their longest run since their final nine games of the 2010-11 campaign, when they were relegated.
Nuno switched to a back five for the second half against Wolves, and this structure, which he used to great effect when finishing seventh while in charge at Forest last season, may be what he chooses to revert to going forward.
In truth, though, Nuno has been struggling for results for some time now – even going back to his time with Forest.
He has gone 26 Premier League games without seeing one of his teams keep a clean sheet. Among all managers in the competition’s history, only Steve Kean (30 games between May 2011 and March 2012) has gone longer without a shutout.
West Ham’s only clean sheet this season came in this game’s reverse fixture, when they beat Forest 3-0 at the City Ground – Nuno was in the opposite dugout that day.
There have been 13 occasions of a manager being in charge of both sides in meetings in a single Premier League campaign, with only Harry Redknapp losing both times (Portsmouth vs Southampton in 2004-05).
His opposite number, Dyche, took over a Forest side in similar turmoil in October.
A run of six wins from eight games in all competitions between November and mid-December suggested Forest were destined to leave the relegation zone behind, but four defeats in a row have followed.
Each of those defeats have come in league action; they haven’t lost five in a row in the Premier League since October 2022, while Dyche has never lost five consecutively in a single campaign as a manager.
He will hope that Callum Hudson-Odoi, who missed the defeat at Villa with a knock, is fit enough for this match.
John Victor, who has been preferred in goal to Matz Sels of late, was substituted off with an apparent leg injury after his error for Villa’s third goal.
This game may also come too soon for Dan Ndoye (knock), while Ryan Yates (hamstring) and Chris Wood (knee) will be unavailable.
Lucas Paquetá was absent for West Ham against Wolves due to a back injury, but could return to help carry the load for this match. Jean-Clair Todibo (knock) was also absent last time out.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka and El Hadji Malick Diouf remain unavailable due to their participation at AFCON but new signing Pablo Felipe could debut after being an unused substitute in the weekend defeat at Wolves.

Nottingham Forest won this exact fixture 2-1 last season, last winning consecutive away league games against West Ham between 1982 and 1984 (3 in a row).
