A much-loved North Carolina science teacher, who was murdered during a home invasion over the weekend, was actually on the phone with 911 dispatchers when her killer began his attack.
Police confirmed to Us Weekly in a statement on Sunday, January 4, that Zoe Welsh called 911 at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, after a man forced his way into her home.
As Welsh, whose age was not provided, was speaking to 911 operators, police claim Ryan Camacho allegedly started attacking her. Police have audio of the brutal incident from the call Welsh made.
Officers raced to the teacher’s home where they found Welsh “suffering from life-threatening injuries.” First responders treated Welsh in the ambulance as she was rushed to the nearest hospital, according to the statement. “Despite lifesaving efforts, Ms. Welsh died due to her injuries.”
Police have not described what injuries Welsh sustained in the attack, and an official cause of death is pending at this time.
Cops started canvassing Welsh’s neighborhood as part of their initial response, and allegedly spotted Camacho, 36, before stopping him for questioning. In time, detectives did charge Camacho with murder and felony burglary.
