On Friday, Jan. 2, the rosters set to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics at Milan and Cortina were revealed on The Today Show by players Jack Hughes, Laila Edwards and Declan Farmer.
The American men’s team is looking for its first gold medal since 1980, when it shocked the world by beating the Soviet Union and then defeating Finland at the Lake Placid, New York Winter Olympics.
New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes, who made the 2026 team, told NBC’s TODAY, “We got a really good group of young hungry Americans that haven’t played in the Olympics before,” noting that NHL players will be in the Games for the first time since 2014. Jack’s brother Quinn Hughes, now on the Minnesota Wild, will also be on the men’s Olympic hockey team. In addition, another set of siblings will go for the gold! Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk and his brother Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators were named to the squad. It’s the first time since 1960 that two sets of brothers will be on a U.S. Men’s Olympic hockey team.

Which players should excel on the men’s squad?
Jack Hughes, 24, who is nursing a right-hand injury he suffered in November, wore a brace on it at the roster reveal. However, as ESPN reported, coach Sullivan said, "Jack is a unique player with his ability to drive offense…we have had conversations around using Jack in the middle at this Olympic experience, and we'll continue to have those conversations leading up to the first game." However, ESPN believes more in the other brother act, saying, “the Tkachuks are the heart and soul of this team.”

The 2026 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team includes two players with Olympic experience in Jake Sanderson (Whitefish, Mont./Ottawa Senators) and Brock Faber (Maple Grove, Minn./Minnesota Wild). Both played for the U.S. in Beijing 2022.
Who stands out on the women’s team?Laila Edwards, 21, a senior at the University of Wisconsin, has achieved a milestone. She will become the first Black woman to compete at the Olympics for the U.S. in women’s hockey.
