Hundreds of four-legged friends are gathering in the southwest suburbs this weekend for the second year of The Great American Dog and Cat Show.
The canines and cats will show off their skills and compete to be the best of the best in a variety of categories.
Getting their hair brushed and blow dried, dogs and their owners from across the country made their way to the Tinley Park Convention Center for a three-day showcase like no other.
“We just keep growing and growing so there’s over 1,700 entries each day over the weekend,” said Scott Pfeil, the president of The Great American Dog Show. “It’s almost like Groundhog Dog because there’s a different best in show winner everyday that’s crowned.”
Spectators got a chance to see the dogs up close and personal, cheering them on as they performed demos and competed.
“When I judge the dog there’s a hands-on component of the examine where I’m looking to see the expressions,” said American Kennel Club judge James Donahue. “A beagle should have a soft pleading expression with these wonderful hound ears.”
Some of the categories this year include best in breed, best in group, best in show, and the creative competition. One of the three newly recognized American Kennel Club bread also made an appearance Friday.
“It’s a Basset Fauve de Bretagne,” said dog owner and breeder Alexis Chism. “They’ve been around from the 1500s so very old—they just kinda haven’t been brought over to America just yet.”
Chism told NBC Chicago that Amaya, Rosie, and Giselle are on their way to make history.
“It’s been amazing we won the breed, we showed twice so we won the breed in both shows,” she said. “My dog just needs to win one more day and he’s a new champion which is awesome.”
The show also featured vendors, speakers, and seminars on the latest trends in dog care, health, and wellness. But for one group of kids it was all about the felines. The cat show was hosted by the TICA’s Windy City Cat Club and featured more than 40 different breeds of pedigree cats and household pets in 18 show rings.
“This is Galileo Figaro,” said cat owner Ann-Marie McNamara. “We’re having a party for him today because he became a Supreme Grand Champion Alter which is the top championship that you can get.”
Whether you’re a fan of dogs or cats, you can’t deny the love people have for these animals and the incredible things they can do.
“You know they’re our pets first obviously,” said Chism. “But they come here and they have a great great time.”
The show runs through the weekend from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event wraps up on Sunday.
