Every once in a while, something hits my timeline that serves as a reminder of why I am thankful that Matt Eberflus is no longer the Chicago Bears head coach.
Today, it was this:
Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus explains what went wrong this season for Dallas’ defense“I don’t think I’d do anything differently.” t.co/4pqnnuHrV9
— Jon Machota (@jonmachota) January 1, 2026I (almost) feel bad for Dallas Cowboys fans, but this is tremendous content.
The Dallas Cowboys are 7-8-1 and will miss the playoffs. Again. At the heart of the Cowboys’ issues is a defense that has allowed the most points (477) and third-most yards (6,029) this season. That unit has allowed the second-most passing touchdowns and second-most rushing touchdowns while forcing the third-fewest turnovers. This is as bad as it gets for a defense. And yet, Matt Eberflus insists that he wouldn’t do anything differently if he had a chance to do it all over again. Go figure.
Matt Eberflus might coach himself out of a job
Reading the quote above gave me immediate flashbacks to his explanation for what I deemed to be irredeemable clock management in what turned out to be his final game as the Bears’ head coach:
“I like what we did there. Again, once it’s under seven, you’re going to call a timeout there, actually under 12, and then you don’t really have an option because it’s third to fourth and you’ve gotta throw it in the end zone then. So, to me, I think we handled it the right way. I do believe that if we just re-racked the play, get it in bounds, call a timeout, and that’s why we held it. It didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.”
In that moment, I felt that statement went a long way toward explaining why Eberflus had a .304 winning percentage as Chicago’s head coach and why his time in that role was going to come to an end. But to hear him beat that drum again, one year later, has me wondering if his time as a defensive coordinator is running out in Dallas. The NFL moves quickly and teams tend to cut ties with coaches when things are clearly not working. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is stubborn and loyal to a fault. So who knows if he will pull the plug on a failing experiement.
Then again, these Matt Eberflus quotes probably won’t help his cause:
WHEN ASKED ABOUT HOW MUCH OWNERSHIP HE TAKES FOR THE DEFENSE’S STRUGGLES: “Ownership and accountability is right with me. I’m the defensive coordinator, so it’s always that. … I take full accountability.” AN OVERVIEW OF THE YEAR THAT WAS RUNNING DALLAS’ DEFENSE: “I think the start of the year, guys were in and out, in terms of we weren’t at full force. And then when we got some guys back, I thought we had a good stretch there. I thought the stretch was pretty good. We started to improve. I know we improved in the run defense and the third-down defense. And then from there we just didn’t execute the way we wanted to at certain moments. Certainly, some good execution in there at times, but it’s got to be better.”These are the quintessential Matt Eberflus quotes. Feigning accountability up front before pointing the finger outward and citing the need for better execution by the end of his ramblings.
It is so painfully obvious that he has not learned from his mistakes as a head coach. I’m not sure if it is rooted in stubornness, foolishness, or a combination of the two. But whatever it is, I’m thankful it is no longer something we must deal with as Bears fans. Only a select few get to coach in the NFL. And even fewer get to work for iconic franchises like the Bears and Cowboys. Leave it to Matt Eberflus to fumble the bag while coaching two of the NFL’s most notable teams.
