Week 18 Injury Updates, Risks I Can’t Ignore, Sugar Bowl Kicking Record, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I think I’m out on the other side of whatever cold I caught right before New Year’s Eve. Good timing! Who wants to be under the weather when the Bears have a big game coming up on Sunday?

For those of you who spent New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day off the grid, I’ll do my best to use this set of BN Bears Bullets to catch you up on some things. For starters, we have injury report updates for the Lions (written by Patrick) and Bears (authored by yours truly). It was encouraging to see Luther Burden III get the upgrade to full participation on Thursday for Chicago’s football team. On the other side of the coin, seeing Detroit’s injury situation makes me wonder if Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell will play it cautiously in the regular-season finale with nothing on the line. Friday’s injury report will be more informative. On the one hand, it is newsworthy that the Philadelphia Eagles are resting their starters in Week 18. But on the other hand, I wouldn’t lock the Bears into the No. 2 seed because of that news due to my feeling that Philly’s backups could take down whatever hodgepodge unit the Washington Commanders put on the field when Sunday’s game kicks off. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni speaks with Ben Johnson after the game at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images I like that the Bears are planning to play their starters on Sunday. It lines up with what this coaching staff has been preaching all year. However, this strategy isn’t without risk. I was reminded that the Packers started Week 18 last season with their starters, only to see quarterback Jordan Love and (to a far more serious extent) wide receiver Christian Watson get injured. Football is a brutal game, so any play is one in which a player risks injury. I wish there was a clear-cut answer that everyone could agree on so we can move on to larger conversations and discussions. Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen (via ESPN’s Courtney Cronin): “I don’t think I coached well enough last week, I don’t think we played well enough last week. So, you learn your lessons, you make the corrections that you need to make. Now we move forward and we’re getting ready for Detroit.” Seeing this tweet had me cheesin’ hard:

This is going to be a good draft for edge rushers.

— Daniel Jeremiah (@MoveTheSticks) January 1, 2026 To be clear, the 2026 NFL Draft is not top of mind right now. But with the College Football taking place, I have found myself more interested in seeking potential Bears fits among the top prospects.

EPISODE NO. 15 OF THE BN BEARS PODCAST IS HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube

Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro broke a Sugar Bowl record (TWICE!) with field goals of 55 and 56 yards. You know you’re having a good day at the office when you break your own record — which was set earlier in the game:

Jk… THIS is the longest field goal in Sugar Bowl history ?Carneiro knocks it through from 56 yards out#CFBPlayoff x #HottyToddy pic.twitter.com/AszB8TZK3M

— College Football Playoff (@CFBPlayoff) January 2, 2026 Because I know you care: Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro is a junior, which makes him draft-eligible. He made 26 of 29 field goals for this season and was successful at an 87.1 percent clip for Western Kentucky during his two seasons with the Hiltoppers. I’m not trying to push Cairo Santos out the door. However, I’m open to competition next summer. But we can cross that bridge when we get to it. Michael David Smith’s lede in this Pro Football Talk post puts the New York Jets’ season in tremendous perspective: “Jets receiver and returner Isaiah Williams has accomplished a rare feat: He has been named Most Valuable Player of a team that cut him during the season.” Bookmarked for later reading is this profile of Indianapolis Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon, who is one of the most fascinating people in the NFL. (The Athletic) I’m not sure what happened to Matthew Golden’s stock, but it seems to be plummeting in Green Bay:

Update on Matthew Golden’s role from #Packers OC Adam Stenavich:“Golden’s got a really bright future, very talented, and his time will come. But I think right now just with the way that room is, he’s not going to be in that premier role when the playoffs come around.” pic.twitter.com/XsPp4tYK8a
