Strike 3: A look into the crystal ball for Colorado’s teams in 2026 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

If someone had told you a year ago that the Denver Broncos would sweep the Kansas City Chiefs and win the AFC West, would you have believed them? That Shedeur Sanders would have his number retired at Folsom Field… and then fall to the fifth round of the NFL Draft? That Michael Malone and Calvin Booth were going to be fired on the eve of the NBA playoffs, and that the new front office would trade Michael Porter, Jr. and acquire a legitimate NBA bench in the process? That the Colorado Rockies would not only lose more than 100 games once again, but after firing skipper Bud Black, they would go on to challenge for the worst record in MLB history?

Okay… maybe you’d have believed that last one.

But the others? No way.

That’s why we love sports. It’s the unpredictable. And there will be more of that in 2026.

So obviously, now’s the time to predict some of that unpredictable. So here we go with the slightly cracked crystal ball:

January: The Oregon Ducks will win the college football playoff. The AFC West champion Denver Broncos will lose out on a trip to the Super Bowl to Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills – again. The Colorado Buffaloes sign 15 players out of the transfer portal, matching the total number that they lose and leaving the roster in roughly the exact same place it was at the end of the season.

February: The San Francisco 49ers will win the Super Bowl. The Nuggets’ Jamal Murray will be passed over for a spot on the international team for the NBA All-Star game, but be named as an injury replacement… and then go on to be named the mini-tournament MVP. The Tennessee Titans will introduce Vance Joseph as their new head coach, and Davis Webb as their new offensive coordinator.

March: The University of Northern Colorado Bears will be the only college basketball team to represent the state of Colorado in the 2026 NCAA basketball tournament. The Denver Broncos will elevate assistant head coach Jim Leonhard to defensive coordinator, replacing Joseph.

April: The Colorado Rockies will win their home opener over the Philadelphia Phillies behind Kyle Freeland, who will throw seven scoreless innings despite being tagged for four pitch-clock violations while shaking off signs from the dugout, where rookie pitching coach Alon Leichman is calling his pitches. The Denver Broncos will select Oregon Ducks tight end Kenyon Sadiq with their first-round pick in the NFL Draft. They’ll also sign former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Rashid Shaheed in free agency.

May: New University of Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo will go on record as saying the upcoming CU football season is “Bowl game or bust” for head coach Deion Sanders.

June: The Los Angeles Dodgers will announce the superstar Shohei Ohtani will begin playing some first base on a part time basis in order to rest All-Star Freddie Freeman. The Colorado Rockies will announce they have signed former star Nolan Arenado (recently released by the St. Louis Cardinals) to a contract for the remainder of the season, and that Arenado will be shifting to first base.

July: MLB names Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle as the team’s lone All-Star representative. Doyle will be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the end of the month. All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II will announce that, after working out with prospective USA Olympic Flag Football teammates in Los Angeles, he will ask Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton to allow him to play some at wide receiver for the upcoming NFL season.

September: The unrecognizable Colorado State Rams under new head coach Jim Mora will capture back the Bronze Boot from the Wyoming Cowboys in the season opener at Canvas Stadium. The Colorado Rockies will lose their 104th game of the season on the final day, completing a 15-game improvement from a season ago.

October: The Los Angeles Dodgers will get upset in the Divisional Round of the National League playoffs by the Chicago Cubs. The Atlanta Braves, led by new manager Walt Weiss, will win the World Series.

November: The Colorado Buffaloes will fall short of qualifying for a bowl game for the third time in four seasons under Deion Sanders and finish 3-9 for the second straight season. The Colorado State Rams will also fall short… but by only one game in their first season in the reformed Pac-12 Conference. Boise State will win the first new Pac-12 title and a spot in the college football playoff.

December: The Denver Broncos will repeat as AFC West Champions behind a standout third season from QB Bo Nix. CU QB Julian Lewis will announce he’s entering the transfer portal, while standout offensive tackle Jordan Seaton will declare for the NFL draft. Buffs head coach Deion Sanders will announce he’s returning for the 2027 season, regardless of whether new athletic director Fernando Lovo likes it or not.

Happy New Year!
