Years of work and advocacy paid off earlier this month, allowing the University of Northern Colorado to reach a milestone in its effort to develop a college of osteopathic medicine in Greeley.
UNC received approval in early December to open the college, which will be the state’s third medical school. A commission on osteopathic college accreditation granted UNC pre-accreditation to begin recruiting and admitting students. Full accreditation will come with the graduation of the first class.
UNC President Andy Feinstein said the university plans to welcome the first class in July, despite the quick turnaround from the approval. In April 2024, the state of Colorado approved funding for the in-progress $127.5 million building to house the college. The building is located on the site of the former Bishop-Lehr Hall on 20th Street, near 11th Avenue.
The process to opening the school also included UNC receiving $25 million from The Weld Trust, the largest donation in school history. Funding for the college is separate from the operations of the university as a whole.
UNC will need about $200 million for the medical college, including the building, start up, accreditation and escrow. Escrow is a contingency fund in case accreditation does not come through and UNC has to reimburse students. An economic impact report paid for by UNC says the college is expected to boost Colorado’s economy by more than $1.4 billion in the next 20 years. About $501 million is projected to remain in Weld County. As of early December, the medical college had 17 employees including founding dean Dr. Beth Longenecker and eight faculty. UNC said it plans to hire an additional 15 faculty and 15 staff by July 1.
