ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester father is grappling with the arrest of his son’s mother, who is now charged with manslaughter in connection to their child’s death.
Ca’hry Gibson, 16, died after an incident in October on Breck Street in Rochester, when Rochester Police say Ca’hry jumped on the hood of a car being driver by his mother, Aneka Connor, during an argument over his cell phone. She quickly drove off with him still on the vehicle, leading to his fall and subsequent coma.
His father, Christopher Gibson, made the difficult decision to take him off life support a month later.
Connor is in Monroe County Jail facing charges of manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with Christopher Gibson, who has been advocating for justice in his son’s case.
Tom Kowalski, News10NBC: “What were your emotions like that day?”
Christopher Gibson, Father: “The day this happened? I was mad, I was angry. I was a lot of things.”
Tom Kowalski: “When you saw him in the hospital, what was that like?”
Christopher Gibson: “Oh man. That broke me. Just thinking about it now. It just, it broke me.”
Ca’hry’s sister, OJ Gibson, shared her feelings from that day.
OJ Gibson, Sister: “I just knew that it was… it wasn’t good. I knew that.”
Christopher made the heart-wrenching decision to donate Ca’hry’s organs, ensuring his son left a legacy.
Tom Kowalski: “What does it mean to have him be able to help other people after his loss?”
Christopher Gibson: “It’s big because he got a legacy now. You know, like he’s only 16-year-old, he didn’t have a chance to build a legacy for himself. You know, no high school graduations, no proms, no marriage, no kids. You know, none of that stuff is going to happen for him now. So what’s left for his legacy, you know what I mean? That’s his legacy now.”
Now, Christopher is committed to seeking justice for his son.
Christopher Gibson: “She got to face the music for what she did to my son. And that’s the bottom line. There’s no getting around that, you know? She blamed me. She blamed him. But the courts blame [her]. So yeah, she gotta answer to that. And I’m going to be right there every single day that she goes to court. I promise you that. Justice for my son. Justice for Ca’hry.”
Aneka Connor is currently held on $35,000 bail and is due back in court Monday.
