IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Voters Tuesday rejected a $22 million proposal for a new firehouse in the St. Paul Boulevard Fire District.
The official tally in the bond referendum was 485 no votes, 358 yes votes, and three invalid votes.
The vote was held at the firehouse on Cooper Road in Irondequoit. The project would have replaced that fire station.
Firefighters say the building’s infrastructure is out of date and doesn’t meet national safety standards.
News10NBC spoke with voters Tuesday about how they felt about the proposal.
Robert Ament: “They want to build a brand new facility, which, this facility is in perfect condition and bomb-proof — yet they have how many, hundreds of square foot, thousands of square foot that they could use for whatever they need,” Robert Ament said.
Jason Horowitz: “I feel that if they need new equipment, if they need new facilities, it should be provided to them for everybody’s safety in the community,”
The proposed project would have cost the average household about $62 more per year in taxes.
