While 2025 is winding down, flu cases are continuing to rise as people prepare to gather for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
“I had a 102.5 fever right away, and then the next day my throat was like razor blades. It was really bad,” said Bernadette, who is recovering from the flu. “To be frank, I have never experienced anything like that even when I had COVID, and COVID was bad. I also had gastrointestinal issues.”
New numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released on Tuesday showed flu cases have climbed across the country, including in Illinois.
Some states are seeing “high” or “very high” flu activity. While Illinois and Wisconsin are listed as “low,” Indiana has been categorized as “high.” Nationwide, 4.6 million cases and more than 49,000 hospitalizations have been reported.

The latest metrics from the Illinois Department of Public Health showed the state at a moderate level for respiratory illnesses and a rise in hospitalizations.
In Cook County, the Department of Public Health reported emergency room visits and admissions for the flu had increased.
“Severe flu seasons can happen particularly when vaccination rates are low,” said Dr. Kiran Joshi, Chief Operating Officer for the Cook County Department of Public Health. “Cases typically increase in December and February…We are seeing flu spread very widely right now with steep, almost vertical growth curves.”
Medical providers have warned flu season still has a way to go, as an increase in flu cases is expected over at least the next several weeks, NBC News reported. Illnesses likely won’t level off until the end of January or possibly February.
Doctors said it’s still not too late to get vaccinated, explaining even getting a shot now can provide meaningful protection. They also encouraged anyone who is sick or starting to feel ill to ring in the new year at home.
