LOVELAND — Amazon.com Inc. will open its 3.5-million-square-foot Loveland warehouse in 2026.
The warehouse opening, several months behind its original timetable, will employ about 1,000 people at the start and may expand to as many as 3,000, according to Nissa LaPoint, spokesperson for Amazon in Colorado. Construction cost was about $400 million, a representative of contractor Trammel Crow Co. said in 2024.
The four-story facility located just north of Northern Colorado Regional Airport in east Loveland along Interstate 25 will also include 5,000 robots as the company attempts to meet what seems to be an insatiable desire on the part of consumers to have products shipped to their homes — and not a week or month from now but today or tomorrow.
The 3.5-million-square-foot facility with 66 loading docks at 6425 Byrd Drive, known internally as DEN9, is now tentatively slated to open in the latter half of next year, LaPoint said. It originally was scheduled to open in 2025 with hiring that was expected to begin at the end of 2024. That didn’t happen.
The delays were self-imposed, said Marc Wulfraat, president of MWPVL International, a logistics consulting firm based in Côte Saint-Luc, Quebec. The company likely used the time to reorganize how it will fulfill package delivery in the region using systems that it has been developing elsewhere in its network, he said.
“Instead of releasing the building as it is, it likely upgraded aspects of the building to access the latest generation of technology. It’s likely that it is incorporating sortation systems to the facility in order to cut out steps in the process,” he said.
Normally, Wulfraat said, Amazon will build large fulfillment centers like the one at Loveland, where merchandise is stored pending orders. Then ordered merchandise is packed into boxes and sent to a sortation center where it is organized onto pallets by ZIP code. The pallets are sent either to the U.S. Post Office or to a delivery center similar to the one that exists at 4555 Viking Way in Centerra, just south of the airport, where workers sort the merchandise into truck routes. That delivery center is known in Amazon parlance as DDE8.
Amazon has been adapting its fulfillment centers to include the sortation function, thus removing a step in the process and speeding up the delivery timeline, Wulfraat said.
As originally envisioned, DEN9 was not going to be the last stop for products that people order online. DDE8 has been the final stop before the blue Amazon trucks venture into neighborhoods to deliver.
The Loveland facility was designed to handle packages weighing 50 pounds and less; larger items such as televisions are shipped from the Aurora warehouse, which is called DEN2. That warehouse supplies all 50 states. It is located at Interstate 70 and E470.
The upper floors of the facility, called AR or Amazon Robotics floors, are home to robotic retrieval of inventory.
At the time of construction, the Loveland fulfillment center was said to be one of the largest warehouses in the country, and it still is, although the Colorado Springs Amazon fulfillment center is about 3.7 million square feet. The largest Amazon warehouse is in Ontario, California, at 4.5 million square feet in six stories. It opened in 2024.
