ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Scammers are targeting inboxes with fake offers promising free gourmet beef, claiming to be from Omaha Steaks. News10NBC investigated and found the website linked in the email isn’t real.

“Omaha Steaks has allocated 500 gourmet sampler boxes at no charge to participating households,” the email falsely claims.

Jeffrey Allan, a technology expert from Nazareth, warned about offers that create urgency. “Any type of offer that creates a great amount of urgency,” Allan said.

The scam email’s subject line reads “Today Only,” another red flag. Allan advised caution with URLs. “Certainly you need to be careful about the URLs you’re visiting,” he said.

The scam email uses the URL yesshewood.com, a clone of the real Omaha Steaks site, which is omahasteaks.com. A quick Google search confirms this.

AI technology has made it easier for scammers to create cloned websites. “What used to take considerable amount of effort to create those types of sites now can be done in minutes,” Allan said.

Even careful consumers may struggle to spot fake sites. “Even product photos can be fairly well faked,” Allan said.

The scammer’s picture of a gourmet cheesecake sampler closely resembles the real one on the Omaha Steaks website. “Same thing with user reviews. It can create tons and tons of user reviews and do so rapidly,” Allan said.

News10NBC reached out to Omaha Steaks for comment, but they didn’t respond. It’s crucial not to click on links in suspicious emails, as they may steal money or install malware on devices.
