Three men were shot following an argument that occurred following a basketball game near Chicago’s St. Sabina Church Sunday afternoon.
A man fired shots from a sidewalk in the 1200 block of West 78th Place at approximately 4:111 p.m. Sunday, injuring three men according to Chicago police.
All three of the men were hospitalized, but their conditions have stabilized, according to officials.
Father Michael Pfleger, a noted anti-violence advocate, said he is “angry” and “disgusted” by the attack, which occurred just steps of St. Sabina Church.
“Things like this get me angry, get me disgusted,” he said. “It’s unfortunate. I say thank God nothing was serious, but three people got shot.”
Pfleger told NBC Chicago the shooting stemmed from an argument that occurred during a basketball game at a nearby community center. All three of the victims were members of a league that rents out the gym space.
“They said everything in the gym was calm and quiet, nothing broke out or anything,” he said. “Nobody pulled a gun, so they presumed everything was calm, but obviously it wasn’t.”
Pfleger’s church has become noteworthy for its anti-violence work, and he said Sunday’s shooting feels like a slap in the face.
“People know what we stand for,” he said. “I, and this church, have fought too hard against guns and against violence, so this is a real disrespect.”
Pfleger said that the league will enact security changes in the aftermath of the shooting.
“From now on, even in adult leagues people will be searched,” he said. “Bags will be searched, and if adults act like children, then I’ll treat them like children.”
The shooting itself was captured on surveillance footage, but a suspect in the case remains at-large. Area Two detectives are investigating the shooting, and no further information was immediately available.
