With a comeback victory over Chelsea, Aston Villa collected their 11th win in a row in all competitions. But how does this astonishing winning sequence compare to previous efforts by Premier League clubs?
When the final whistle blew at the Stadium of Light on Sunday 21 September, believe it or not, there were people thinking that Unai Emery’s time as manager of Aston Villa was running out.
They failed to win any of their opening five games to a league season for just the fourth time in their long history, making it their worst winless start to a league campaign in 56 years, and their worst in a top-flight league season since 1964-65.
Just five days prior to that Sunderland defeat, Villa were also knocked out of the League Cup at the first hurdle following a penalty-shootout defeat to Brentford, while Matty Cash’s goal in the 1-1 draw versus the 10-man Black Cats was their first of the Premier League season. They had taken 427 minutes to register a goal in the competition.
Then they won in the UEFA Europa League at home to Bologna on 25 September and it all changed. That was their first victory of the season and started an astonishing run of 17 wins in 19 games across all competitions.
Eleven of those wins have come in their last 11 competitive games, equalling a club record, achieved only in September 1897 and March 1914 previously. Eight wins during the run have come in the Premier League, meaning Villa have won eight consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since a run of nine between October and December 1910.
A top-of-the-table clash with Arsenal on 30 December offers a chance to extend their winning run and end 2025 on a real high, but how far off the Premier League record books are they?
The Longest Premier League Winning Runs
Aston Villa’s current eight-game winning streak might be impressive, but it’s still some way off the Premier League record for wins in a row.
Both Liverpool (between October 2019 and February 2020) and Manchester City (between August 2017 and December 2017) have enjoyed 18-game winning streaks in the Premier League, which are also the all-time longest English top-flight winning runs.
As things stand, there have been 27 separate instances of teams going on longer winning runs in the Premier League than Aston Villa’s current sequence of eight in a row, the last being Man City’s 13-game winning run between April and September 2024.
Liverpool – 18 wins in a row (27/10/2019 to 24/02/2020)Manchester City – 18 wins in a row (26/08/2017 to 27/12/2017)Liverpool – 17 wins in a row (10/03/2019 to 05/10/2019)Manchester City – 15 wins in a row (03/02/2019 to 10/08/2019)Manchester City – 15 wins in a row (19/12/2020 to 02/03/2021)Arsenal – 14 wins in a row (10/02/2002 to 18/08/2002)Chelsea – 13 wins in a row (01/10/2016 to 31/12/2016)Manchester City – 13 wins in a row (03/04/2024 to 14/09/2024)Manchester City – 12 wins in a row (06/11/2021 to 15/01/2022)Manchester City – 12 wins in a row (25/02/2023 to 21/05/2023)Manchester United – 12 wins in a row (11/03/2000 to 20/08/2000)
The Longest Winning Runs by Premier League Clubs in All Competitions
This is where Aston Villa’s current winning run is more impressive compared to previous efforts by Premier League clubs.
Only four Premier League teams have sustained longer winning runs across all competitions than Villa’s current 11-game winning streak, and should they surprise Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Matchday 19 of the 2025-26 league campaign, their run will be bettered by just two clubs in the Premier League era.
They’ll have to win another 11 competitive games in a row to eclipse the sensational 21-game winning streak by Pep Guardiola’s Man City side between December 2020 and March 2021, though.
Starting with a victory at Southampton in the Premier League on 19 December 2020, City enjoyed 21 successive wins in all competitions before a surprise 2-0 home defeat to rivals Manchester United on 7 March 2021.
Arsenal won their final 11 competitive games of the 2001-02 season before adding two more victories at the start of 2002-03 campaign, with that 13-game winning streak the second longest by a Premier League club in all competitions by a Premier League club.
Manchester City – 21 wins in a row (19/12/2020 to 02/03/2021)Arsenal – 13 wins in a row (23/03/2002 to 18/08/2002)Arsenal – 12 wins in a row (25/08/2007 to 23/10/2007)Arsenal – 12 wins in a row (16/03/2000 to 06/05/2000)Aston Villa – 11 wins in a row (Ongoing – started on 06/11/2025)Manchester City – 11 wins in a row (19/12/2023 to 13/02/2024)Arsenal – 11 wins in a row (25/08/2018 to 25/10/2018)Manchester City – 11 wins in a row (26/08/2017 to 21/10/2017)Manchester City – 11 wins in a row (19/04/2015 to 12/09/2015)Manchester United – 11 wins in a row (11/01/2009 to 21/02/2009)Liverpool – 11 wins in a row (15/03/2006 to 07/05/2006)
