HILTON, N.Y. — Residents of the Hilton East Assisted Living Facility had to evacuate overnight because of water leaking inside the building.
Over 100 residents were moved to Quest Elementary School, about a mile away. The evacuation took around five hours and involved firefighters, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies, and school buses.
The Hilton Fire Department confirmed that the building faced roof issues due to snow and ice melt from the weekend. The fire chief explained that the drains couldn’t handle the snow melting so quickly and the rain, leading to leaks inside the building.
Through a window, part of the ceiling appeared to be coming down. In addition to first responders, staff members also helped by boarding buses to transport residents between the facility and the school. It took about 10 school buses to complete the evacuation.
Currently, residents are at the elementary school but will be moved to other county facilities while Hilton East undergoes repairs. There’s no word on when the repairs will be completed.
