The Food People Over 50 Should Eat Every Week To Strengthen Immunity, According to Immunologists

“Fatty fish like wild salmon, sardines, mackerel and trout are excellent sources of natural vitamin D, B12 and selenium, in addition to several of the other micronutrients that are important for the immune system,” saysDr. Amanda Salih, MD, MPH, allergist-immunologist at Rush University Medical Center. “The omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, in fatty fish also have multiple described anti-inflammatory properties.” Zinc is another important element that supports immunity, and why people over 50 are advised to eat fatty fish regularly.

How you cook your fatty fish matters, too, as you want to preserve their anti-inflammatory properties and keep your meals nutritionally dense. Dr. Aujnarain advises steering clear of frying your fish and baking, grilling or air-frying them instead.   

While you should be eating fatty fish every week to strengthen your immunity (as long as your doctor approves), there are several other foods you should be eating each week for your immune system too.

“The majority of immune activity is closely tied to the gut,” explains Greenberg. “Fermented foods introduce live, beneficial bacteria that help strengthen the gut lining, improve communication between immune cells, and support a more balanced inflammatory response. A healthier gut environment allows the immune system to respond more effectively to infections and recover more efficiently.” 

“The antioxidants they contain combat oxidative stress, which can damage immune cells,” says Dr. Younus. “By supporting the production and function of immune cells and reducing inflammation, leafy greens help to counteract some of the effects of immunosenescence.”

While incorporating these foods into your diet if you’re over 50 (or as you age) can strengthen your immunity, you should also engage in other healthy habits. “A healthy diet, regular exercise, sleep, stress reduction, and staying current on vaccinations are all going to be important ways to counter immunosenescence and contribute to a healthy functioning immune system,” says Dr. Salih.
