Snow will fall across parts of the UK on New Year’s Day as temperatures are set to plummet next week.
The Met Office has predicted that a cold blast of arctic air will turn rain into snow and sleet on January 1 after a milder than usual December.
Next week, temperatures are expected to drop to between 1 to 2 degrees in central Scotland. In Leeds, it will be around 6°C on New Year’s Day (Wednesday), falling to 0°C overnight. And in London, it will be 7°C and sunny on the first day of 2026.
But the Met Office told The i Paper that snow will fall in Scotland and it’s “likely” to creep south.
Dan Stroud, senior operational meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “We’re likely to see the wind switch round more to a northerly wind coming from the Arctic.

— Met Office (@metoffice) December 28, 2025“That’s likely to turn showers across Scotland and the North increasingly to sleet and snow even at fair levels, almost sea levels, during the course of Friday and beyond. So we need to keep a close eye on it.
“At the moment we’ve highlighted areas exposed to northerly wind so north and northwest Scotland initially but it’s likely to spread further south.
“There is still a question mark over the detail but broadly speaking were expecting very cold conditions pushing south on new years day with showers turning, increasingly wintery Scotland.”

In the first week of the new year, the Met Office said temperatures will be “below average” but could warm up as the week progresses.
There will be more “wintry hazards” expected. It said rain showers across the south will be followed by high pressure in the northwest with low pressure to the east bringing a “fairly settled period”.
But the forecaster added there will be “some wintry hazards including snow” to north facing coastal areas. The snow will venture further inland at times, and there may be “some windier periods with more prolonged rain”. Overall, it will be dryer than usual.
