This ‘Brady Bunch’ Star’s Dad Discovered The Carpenters — Here’s How ...Saudi Arabia

In the late 1960s, Plumb’s father, Neely Plumb, spotted Karen and Richard Carpenter and their jazz trio bandmate at a “Battle of the Bands” contest and offered them a contract. While the stint was short-lived, the early signing with RCA Records led the singing siblings on a path to massive success with A&M Records, where they produced megahits such as  "Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun," and "Yesterday Once More.”

“It was a big deal back then,” he said of the musical competition. “So record labels - I didn't know this at the time - but would send out A&R men to keep their ears open for any new talent. …So we're walking out and a fellow comes up, wants to know if we'd be interested in recording. The long and short of it is his name was Neely Plumb - P-l-u-m-b, and I knew that name anyway because … I looked for credits, songwriter credits, producers, all that stuff on records that I'd buy. …I knew his name. And he wanted to know, as I said, if we were interested in recording. What I could say? 'Oh no?'”

“So, again, long story short, they signed us,” Carpenter said. “We were signed because Neely was the head of A&R West Coast RCA.”

In 1969, the same year the Carpenters signed with A&M, Neely’s daughter Eve became a cast member on The Brady Bunch. In a cute crossover, the singing duo was once referenced on the ABCsitcom. In the 1972 episode “Dough Re Mi,” the Brady kids form a musical group after Greg (Barry Williams) discovers that family groups sell millions of records.

”There's six of us Brady kids,” Peter Brady (Christopher Knight) notes in the episode. “We'd make three times as much as the Carpenters. There are only two of them.”

In December 2025, The Brady Bunch star also shared a sweet memory of her dad, who died in 2000. Plumb captioned an Instagram post that featured a still shot from one of her earliest TV roles. “Whenever I was on TV as a kid, my Dad, Neely, would take a picture as the show aired- no DVRs back then!“ she revealed. "This is from one of the episodes of The Big Valley I appeared in - the orphanage had burned down and the kids were rescued and taken to the Barkley's ranch.“
