ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We have issued a Yellow Alert for Monday due to potentially damaging winds. This will be part of a large and strong low pressure system that will affect us starting this afternoon. Cold and cloudy conditions will change to widespread moderate to heavy rain, which will last all the way through Monday morning.
Nearly an inch and a half of rain is possible. That will soak the ground, making it easier for shallow rooted trees to fall once the strong winds arrive. Gusts could be in excess of 60 MPH at times, leading to tree and powerline damage, scattered power outages, loose outdoor objects being blown away, and difficult driving conditions for tall vehicles. The strongest gusts are likely in the afternoon but will be an issue all day. Winds will be out of the southwest in the morning, and out of the northwest in the evening.
Lake effect snow will also start back up as temperatures plummet from the 50s to the 20s over the course of Monday. It will start off of Lake Erie and end off of Lake Ontario. Some accumulation will make its way into Rochester by the evening commute, but only minimal amounts are likely. With the wind however, that snow will be blown around, reducing visibility. This will be more of an issue near Buffalo where more snow is expected to fall, but nevertheless it will contribute to an ugly Monday.
Tuesday morning lake snow off of Lake Ontario could pose an issue for the morning and evening commute, but we are monitoring that closely and will give more updates later. Winds will still be blustery but should not be damaging.
Bitterly cold, flaky, and breezy conditions continue all the way through New Year’s Day. Wind chill values will be in the negatives to close out the week. A rough way to end the year and begin the new one… Stay warm!
