A suspect was taken into custody following a SWAT response after a woman was shot in the head early Saturday morning in northwest Indiana, police said.
The shooting was reported at approximately 2:33 a.m. along South 18th Street near Broadway Avenue in Chesterton. Police, writing in a Facebook post, said officers responding to a call of a person who had been shot located a woman who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
The woman was alert and able to communicate with officers before being transported to a regional trauma center, where she was listed in serious condition.
Police investigating the incident went to the home where the shooting is believed to have occurred, but weren’t able to reach anyone inside, authorities said. Officers reported seeing lights being turned off on the second floor of the building, police stated.
After obtaining a search warrant, the Porter County SWAT Team entered the residence and took a male suspect into custody without incident, police stated. Multiple witnesses were located and brought in for questioning.
As of Saturday afternoon, the suspect remained in custody on preliminary charges, as formal charges hadn’t been filed.
