Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann will have a lot of weapons to worry about on New Year’s Day night when his Bulldogs unit tries to shut down high-octane SEC rival Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl.
Everything will be on the line for the Dawgs and Rebels in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal in New Orleans, which will kick off at about 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. The first time these teams met on Oct. 18 in Athens, Georgia outlasted Ole Miss, 43-35, and though the Rebels put up a lot of points, the Bulldogs were able to smother star running back Kewan Lacy.
Schumann’s unit held the sophomore sensation to a season-low 31 yards on 12 carries, and though Lacy scored 2 touchdowns, he wasn’t able to put his stamp on the game like he had for most of his breakout 2025 season. It was a heroic effort against Lacy, considering that he finished the regular season with 1,366 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns.
Doing it in October was great. But doing it on New Year’s Day night will be a whole different animal and Schumann knows it. He spoke to reporters about the task ahead that his defense has in trying to slow down Lacy, with a spot in the semifinals on the line this time.
“He’s forced the most missed tackles in the country. … That ability to kind of win his matchups in that sense (is huge),” Schumann said.

— Jordan D. Hill (@JordanDavisHill) December 27, 2025Schumann’s unit held Ole Miss to 88 yards rushing back in October on its home field, and now it’ll try to do something like that again in New Orleans, on a neutral field.
The Dawgs handed the Rebels their only loss of the season a few months ago, and they’ll be put to the test with the old sports adage of how tough it is to beat a team twice in the same season.
More than that, they’ll be trying to slow down Lacy twice in the same season, which Schumann knows won’t be easy.
