What is bravery?
Bravery is showing strength during times of danger, fear or difficulty.
The BYU Cougars, led by freshman QB Bear Bachmeier, showed plenty of it in the 4th quarter of the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday evening.
The Cougars didn’t look strong for most of the first half against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets during Saturday night’s Pop-Tarts Bowl. But a 15-point 4th quarter outburst led to a 25-21 victory for coach Kalani Sitake and company.
BYU set out to prove that it belonged in the Playoff, in a game that was originally set to feature fellow Playoff snub Notre Dame.
It might have taken the Cougars 3 quarters to wake up, but they eventually did and scored win No. 12 on the season.
Sitake got a mini-Pop-Tart shower instead of a Gatorade shower, but the gods were not appeased. A much bigger sacrifice was needed following a game of that caliber.
In fact, 1 Pop-Tart was far from enough. No, this game demanded multiple appeasements to the gods up in sugary Heaven.
Bravery? Thy name is Pop-Tarts. As the sprinkled Pop-Tarts slowly faced their demise, disappearing into the inferno of the giant toaster wheeled out into the middle of the field for the macabre display, the players gathered ’round. Helmets were off.
Out of respect? Maybe. Out of hunger? Certainly.
Soon, the sacrifice was complete. The feast was on.
