Following a mild weekend with above average temperatures, a chance of snow Sunday night kicks off a spell of cooler weather that is expected to continue into the new year.
Cloud coverage and highs in the mid 40s — roughly 10 degrees above average — are expected Saturday in the Chicago area, followed by a similar forecast for Sunday morning with temps in the mid to upper 50s.
Windy rain is expected to move in Sunday, followed by a drop in temperatures in the evening and a chance of light snow before midnight. Most of the rain will fall between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes.
Sunday night will be “cold and blustery” thanks to the falling temperatures and 20 to 25 mile per hour winds moving into the area, Jeanes said.
There is a threat of severe weather Sunday in Central Illinois, Central Indiana and along the Ohio River Valley with strong storms in the area, Jeanes warned, and heavy snow is expected to blanket Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota with over 10 inches of snow possible in some areas.
The light snow is expected to ramp up early Monday morning with a chance of snow showers in the Chicago area, mainly before noon, though no accumulation is expected.
The start of the week will also feel much cooler in the Chicago area than the start of the weekend, with highs in the low to mid 20s Monday and around 30 degrees Tuesday.
Though the Chicago area did not get a white Christmas this year, chances of a white New Year’s Day are possible.
Highs on New Year’s Eve are expected to be around 30 degrees, though Mother Nature has her own ball drop on the forecast: a chance of snow moving in around midnight followed by snow showers early New Years Day.
The start to the new year will be partly sunny and cold, with highs in the low 20s.
