Caleb Williams is having a solid second season. And while the Chicago Bears starting quarterback might fall short of the 70 percent completion rate and 4,000-yard passing season goals that were set earlier in the season, Williams has put a lot of good stuff on tape. At a minimum, his work over his first two seasons has a pro has garnered some respect.
Take for example what San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan and Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh had to say about Chicago’s QB1:
"Caleb is one of the best throwers and athletic quarterbacks I've ever seen. He makes some big-time throws. Extremely scary on the perimeter. It makes sense why he's playing at such a high level."Kyle Shanahan with high praise for Bears quarterback Caleb Williams pic.twitter.com/mMMJivgxe0

He's improved tremendously from a year ago. Credit to Ben and his staff."Robert Saleh on Caleb Williams pic.twitter.com/71QrEoJSgb

49ers coaches have respect for Bears QB Caleb Williams
For the record, this isn’t the first time that 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has gushed when speaking about Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. Shanahan had nothing but nice things to say about the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft before Chicago’s football team traveled out to California to face San Francisco in Santa Clara. Nevertheless, I sitll like reading about opposing coaches saying good stuff about Bears quarterbacks because it isn’t something that I’m used to as a Bears fan.

Now that I’m thinking about it, it was kind of a wild time at this time last year. Every few years, a vocal minority representing the Niners fan base gets a little bit angsty and wants to switch things up at coach. There were Shanahan trade rumors (that the coach eventually cleared up) popping up just as Chicago was beginning its search for a new coach. All is well that ends well with Ben Johnson calling the shots in Chicago. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend some time last year wondering what fair value would look like in a trade for Kyle Shanahan.
EPISODE NO. 14 OF THE BLEACHER NATION BEARS PODCAST IS OUT: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
I look forward to seeing how Caleb Williams performs in his second appearance against the 49ers. Last year, Williams completed 17 of 23 passes (73.9%) and threw for two touchdowns without throwing an interception. He posted a 116.9 passer rating in that game, too. But he threw for just 134 yards, averaged only 5.8 yards per completion, and was sacked seven times. It was a mostly forgettable game in what was otherwise remembered as Thomas Brown’s first game as Chicago’s interim head coach. Hopefully, things are more entertaining this time around when Sunday Night Football kicks off.
