VICTOR, N.Y. — On Christmas Day morning, Marlies and Chris Sullivan of Neighborhood Cats Network were busy feeding dozens of cats in Victor, as they work year-round to ensure all cats are safe and well-fed.
The Neighborhood Cats Network houses twelve cats that live just off Rowley Road, providing them with more than just meals. They also offer beds to keep them warm during harsh weather.
“They’re all getting a little chicken,” Marlies Sullivan said.
“You put straw in and two or three cats can get in. That can be 20 below zero and they’re fine,” Chris Sullivan said.
The organization focuses on managing overpopulation through a trap, neuter, and release program.
“We are a rescue organization mainly for community cats in Monroe and Ontario counties, western New York,” Marlies Sullivan said. “And we do a lot of TNR, trap, neuter release.”
Over the years, they’ve built homes for thousands of cats.
“I would say that people often think that feral cats or community cats are disease wild cats, but they’re really no different than the cat that’s sitting next to you on your couch right now,” Marlies Sullivan said. “They desire the same things. They want love, they want attention, they want affection, and they want to be noticed. And I think that’s what we try to do.”
The Sullivans manage about 75 cats on their own.
“We name them because it’s also how we can keep track of them,” Marlies Sullivan said. “We do have kind of a visual inventory at each of the colonies, and that’s how we know. We also then know if another cat shows up, that we then have to put through the TNR process.”
The feeding stations have windows inside to help warm the space when it’s sunny. The Sullivans are committed to their work 24/7.
“I know a lot of people are just rolling out of bed getting that cup of coffee going and turning on the news,” Marlies Sullivan said. “But then I realized that one of the better parts of our days is when we go out there and we see what we do for these cats, and we come home. And you know, when you do this kind of work, you actually really feel good. You’re giving something of yourself and there’s nothing better than that,” she added.
Those interested in getting involved can help cats like Marilyn every day. More information about volunteering and fundraising efforts to keep the cat food supply flowing can be found on their website, here.
