As Chicagoans enjoy time with family and friends on Christmas Eve, dozens of students are hard at work, volunteering their time to make sure no child goes without on Christmas.
One of those student volunteers is Cory Dean.
“It’s great. I’ve been wanting to do this since my first year. I get to finally do it. It’s amazing. I love the vibe, I love the energy,” said Dean, who’s now in his third year with the group I am a Gentleman, Incorporated.
The Chicago-based nonprofit is dedicated to developing and mentoring young men and currently serving 72 from 17 communities across the city.
“Part of their curriculum is demonstrating what it means to be productive citizens in their communities. They are putting their hands and feet to action making sure they serve on Christmas Eve,” said Jermaine Anderson, the Executive Director.
This is the 11th year for I am a Gentleman, Inc.’s annual toy giveaway. The event, hosted in partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers in Chicago (NALC), now also includes a coat and food distribution.
In addition to gifts, the first 250 families were treated to a grocery bag full of the essentials to prepare a traditional Christmas dinner, courtesy of Mariano’s.
“This time of the year, it is so hard to see families go without. Anything we can do to make a family feel happy at Christmas time, what else can I ask for?” said Elise Foster, NALC-Chicago president.
Children of all ages were able to select toys ranging from dolls and tech, to games and crafts.
The toys were collected through donations from private donors and companies and a NALC-Chicago seasonal toy drive.
“Giving back is what the holiday spirit is all about,” said Foster.
