First Alert Weather: A quiet Christmas followed by impactful snow on Friday ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y.

The First Alert Weather Team has issued a Yellow Alert for heavy snow starting Friday afternoon. Until then, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will bring quiet weather.

Christmas Eve temperatures will drop to a low of 27 degrees and winds will stay between 5 to 10 mph out of the south. High pressure will keep most snow from reaching the surface, though some spotty flakes will try to work in overnight on Christmas Eve. Any snow will be spotty with trace accumulations.

Christmas Day will be a bit breezy as winds will shift out the northeast through the day between 15 to 25 mph. This will bring winds over Lake Ontario with a slight chance for some spotty lake effect snow showers to develop. However, dry air at the surface is set to overpower these flakes and accumulations should remain trace at the surface. High temperatures will reach 36 degrees for Christmas Day but will drop through the evening as winds shift to out of the northeast. This will bring Christmas night’s low temperatures to 17 degrees with mostly dry conditions.

We are tracking a Yellow Alert for Friday as the center of an approaching low pressure system tracks to our south. This current positioning puts much of Monroe County in the right position for heavier snowfall. Though accumulations will be fine-tuned over the next 24 hours to 36 hours as new data comes through, there seems to be a general upward trend in snow accumulations. Considering the position Rochester falls within this storm and the added enhancement from the Great Lakes, it is likely much of Monroe County will see at least 4 to 7 inches.

In summary, though snowfall amounts will increase in accuracy from Wednesday night through Friday, it is certain that major travel impacts will be seen across western New York state. Expect heavy snow through the Rochester region starting Friday afternoon. Heading into the Southern Tier, expect increasing icy conditions instead of heavy snowfall accumulations. Travel conditions substantially improve on Saturday with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 30s.
