ROCHESTER — Meals on Wheels is spreading holiday cheer by delivering more than just food to those in need.
Lance Brown, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, began volunteering in 2020 during COVID and continues to find fulfillment in helping others.
“For some people, I think I might be the only person they see all day long,” Brown said. “So it is just kind of, kind of checking on them, seeing how they’re doing.”
Around 80 volunteers are delivering 1,900 meals today, ensuring that people receive both food and companionship.
Meals on Wheels Assistant Director Joe DelGrosso said volunteers check on people, making sure they’re home and not having any problems.
“They’re not just getting the warm meal, but they’re also getting to talk to somebody, a friendly face that they might know,” he said.
These relationships extend beyond just the volunteers and those they help.
“One day, three sisters greeted me and told me their mom had passed away, you know, and they all wanted to say thank you to me, and it was really heartfelt,” Brown said.
DelGrosso said volunteers are the lifeblood of Meals on Wheels. Volunteers typically spend over an hour delivering to between five and 10 homes. They are delivering extra frozen meals, as there will be no deliveries Thursday or Friday due to Christmas.
“This is folks in Rochester, in this county, helping feed the folks here, helping keep them fed, making sure that they’re happy, making sure they’re safe, he said.”
