Opinion: You have the ability to help Mission Trails Regional Park  ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

Why do you live where you live?

Maybe — if you’re in East County — you moved to the area for easy access to Mission Trails Regional Park, or perhaps you chose to live near the park because you enjoy the beautiful views Mission Trails offers.

Whatever your connection to the park, there’s no denying that its presence is awe-inspiring, and the fact that it exists within our urban setting is nothing short of a miracle.

Some might remember when the park was formed in the 1970s and 1980s, led by community members with a vision and conservation spirit. We’re grateful to them and to the elected officials who ensured that the park became a community resource for area residents.

Since 1988, we at the nonprofit MTRP Foundation have provided sustained support for the park, underwriting projects big and small, from recent land acquisitions to expand Mission Trails to purchasing trail cameras to monitor wildlife and free field trips to Mission Trails for thousands of local students annually.

Donations from neighbors like you are especially needed this year as grant funding has dwindled and fundraising has become more challenging.

Now is the time to make a tax-deductible donation, as there will be major changes to federal charitable deduction rules beginning Jan. 1, 2026, and the changes will reduce the tax value of charitable giving for many individuals.

When you give to the MTRP Foundation, your donation can support a range of projects at the park, including ones that directly benefit neighbors like you.

With funding from the state, the MTRP Foundation has engaged specialized crews to work year-round to remove fire-prone, non-native brush at the park to reduce wildfire risk and help safeguard our surrounding neighborhoods.

This multi-year program will cover several “grow/kill” cycles and conclude with significant habitat restoration projects.

Another habitat restoration project is currently under way is at Kumeyaay Lake and along the San Diego River, where crews are removing invasive primrose to improve water quality and strengthen ecosystems that sustain wildlife.

This year, the MTRP Foundation was honored as a California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Chris Ward. This recognition reflects the dedicated work of our team, volunteers, and partners, and the steadfast support of community members like you.

As the year comes to a close, we hope you will support the nonprofit in your own backyard, one that is solely dedicated to preserving, protecting, and improving Mission Trails. Every contribution makes a difference, and together we can keep Mission Trails wild and welcoming.

If you have any questions about supporting Mission Trails, please drop an email to jmorrissey@mtrp.org, call (619) 668-3280, or stop by the MTRP Visitor Center on weekdays. Happy holidays, and thank you for supporting Mission Trails — nature in our own backyard.
