A suburban mother who lost her daughter to cancer a few years ago is working hard this holiday season to ensure other families enduring what hers did feel seen and supported.
After she was diagnosed with bone and tissue cancer at 21 years old in 2016, Kennedy Parker and her mother started the Kennedy Project as a way to give thanks to the nurses and doctors who cared for her.
“She got so consumed with people she was meeting she decided she wanted to do something for them,” said Kennedy’s mother, Darnesha Evans. “She would give her nurses and doctors gift cards to say thank you. Then, Project Kennedy got bigger and bigger. Now, here we are. She wanted the nonprofit to flourish.”
Evans, who lives in Glenwood, said her daughter would have celebrated her 31st birthday this past July.
“Kennedy loved to smile and laugh and that is one thing I miss about her,” said her mom, Darnesha Evans who lives in Glenwood. “You hear cancer and don’t think about anything else.”
Shortly after Kennedy passed in 2020, a close friend donated blankets to the nonprofit and from that grew Blanket Days.
Soon, teams of volunteers got to work crafting special blankets – in Kennedy’s honor.
“We also bought blankets. The community would come out, and they tie as many blankets as they could. What we wanted was a blanket in every state,” Evans said.
Over the weekend, that goal was reached — a Project Kennedy blanket is now in every state.
The blankets were sent to caregivers, patients, friends and hospitals including several local ones.
“We send them for free. We fundraise and if we have to come out of pocket, we do. What hurts the most is she is not here to see it or be a part of it. But it is so worth it,” Evans said. “I know she would be proud. This is bigger than what she anticipated.”
