No. 9 Alabama will travel to Pasadena, CA to take on No. 1 Indiana in the Rose Bowl and quarterfinal of the College Football playoff on New Year’s Day.
On the sidelines for the Hoosiers is former Alabama wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Curt Cignetti, who served on former head coach Nick Saban’s inaugural staff in 2007 and left for his first head coaching gig at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2011.
“I was just ready for something different,” he said. “At the end of the day, it prepared me for where I am today.”
Before the teams head out west with their seasons on the line, Cignetti caught up with the media Monday to talk about the matchup. However, a large portion of the press conference featured the 64-year-old reflecting on his time in Tuscaloosa.
“We had a great experience at Alabama,” Cignetti said. “It was a real important part of my journey. I learned a lot from coach Saban in terms of organization, standards, stopping complacency. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my time under Nick.”
He added that he thinks about his time at Alabama “every single day” because of the impact that it had on his growth and development as a coach.
“I think philosophically, the program we run here is probably more the same than different than Alabama,” Cignetti said. “So there’s probably not a day that goes by where I don’t draw from those experiences.”
Cignetti then turned his focus towards the current edition of the Crimson Tide, complimenting head coach Kalen DeBoer and the job he’s done thus far.
“I’ve been following his career for a long time. He kind of started out at a lower level like I did, and ever since he went to Washington, I’ve really studied his offense and I think he’s a great coach,” he said of DeBoer.
Cignetti mentioned that he’s had the chance to watch a lot of the Crimson Tide’s games this season and praised the team’s offense. He also commended his opponent for its performance in its first round CFP game against Oklahoma.
“That was a tremendous comeback on the road in a hostile environment,” he said. “To come back from 17 points down and come out with a win, I think it tells you a lot about the character of that football team.”
Cignetti’s squad will face off against Alabama at 3 p.m. CT at the Rose Bowl, and the game can be streamed on ESPN.
“They’re extremely well coached and they’re a really good team,” Cignetti said. “It’ll be a tremendous challenge.”
