UCLA hires Darrick Yray as football general manager ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

UCLA officially announced Darrick Yray as its football general manager under head coach Bob Chesney on Tuesday afternoon.

Yray, who was general manager of personnel at Florida State for four years, building the 2023 through 2025 rosters, brings West Coast experience to Chesney’s front office. From 2015 to 2021, Yray worked at Oregon State and held the director of player personnel title for his final three years in Corvallis.

“I’m honored and excited to step into the role of General Manager on Coach Chesney’s staff at UCLA,” Yray said in a press release. “This tremendous opportunity represents a new chapter, and I’m grateful to be joining an institution with such a strong tradition of excellence.”

Florida State brought in top-20 recruiting classes in each of his four seasons with the Seminoles.

Yray replaced former general manager Khari Darlington, who spoke to the media just a few weeks ago about the Bruins’ early national signing day recruiting class, which currently sits as the 68th-ranked recruiting class in the nation, according to 247Sports.

Marshawn Friloux, UCLA’s senior director of football recruiting operations, worked to help build the incoming freshman class and is still employed by the university and is working with Yray in the early days of Chesney’s tenure.

Yray had already hit the ground running before his official announcement. Last week, the 36-year-old met with members of the Southern California high school football powerhouse Mater Dei, including head coach Raul Lara. Chesney, who has yet to vie for Trinity League players across Orange County, will have to endear himself to the new recruiting environment across the West Coast, including programs such as St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita.

During Chesney’s press conference two weeks ago, introducing the Pennsylvania native as the 20th head football coach of the Bruins, he revealed the steps he planned to take when building a new staff.

“I think we got to make sure, as we begin our hiring process, that we make sure we have people that have deep ties here to the West Coast, that certainly understand the players within this environment and understand the areas and understand the power players within it,” Chesney said.

Hiring Yray, who helped build Oregon State into a Pac-12 powerhouse in the final years of the conference’s old iteration, seems to fit the bill.

Among Chesney’s former staffers, James Madison’s assistant director of player personnel, Michael Moriarty, announced Tuesday on X that he is joining UCLA’s recruiting staff, but did not specify a job title. Nathan Applebaum, JMU’s director of player personnel, also made a post bidding adieu to the Dukes, but has not announced if he is also coming to Westwood.
