A woman died near Fort Bragg Tuesday afternoon after being swept into the ocean by a large wave, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the MCSO, deputies responded to MacKerricher State Park, north of the city of Fort Bragg, around 2 p.m. on Dec. 22 to assist California State Parks personnel and medical first responders who were treating a woman who had been pulled from the ocean by witnesses.
The MCSO reports learning that the woman “was knocked off a rock by a large wave and swept into the ocean (and that) bystanders who witnessed the incident were able to rescue the subject from the ocean and brought (her) back to the shore.”
The woman, identified only as likely in her 70s, was further described as unresponsive and having “lost consciousness after being brought to the nearby beach,” and though “advanced live-saving measures were performed,” they were ultimately unsuccessful, and the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
MCSO personnel responded to conduct a coroner’s investigation, which but began with determining that none of the witnesses reporting knowing the woman, and that no one had been visiting the park with her. She is described as a “white, female adult in her 70s with no unique identifying features (such as scars, marks or tattoos),” and the MCSO reports that no identifying documents were found with her.
“No suspicious circumstances were found at the beach as the incident was witnessed by bystanders who rescued the subject from the ocean,” the MCSO explains in its press release, noting that “additional investigative efforts were conducted to include checking unattended vehicles left at the parking area of MacKerricher State Park and inquiring with other local law enforcement agencies regarding possible missing persons reports.”
As of Tuesday morning, the MCSO was still trying to identify the woman, and requested that “anyone with information related to this investigation is requested to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086.” It also noted that it “notified local and regional law enforcement of this investigation and requested to be contacted immediately if other law enforcement agencies are notified of a missing person matching the general description/age” of the woman in this case.
“Additional information will be released regarding this investigation once the decedent has been properly identified and their legal next-of-kin have been notified of the circumstances of this coroner’s investigation,” the MSCO reported. “A post-mortem examination will be conducted in the following week by a forensic pathologist. The official cause and manner of death will not be released until the pathologist completes their examination and investigative reports.”
