Kirby Smart downplays impact of Lane Kiffin’s exit ahead of Sugar Bowl vs. Ole Miss ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Kirby Smart already had one showdown with Lane Kiffin this past season in Athens, where Georgia took down Ole Miss, 43-35, all the way back in mid-October to hand the Rebels their only loss of the season.

Of course, Smart is hoping that still won’t be Ole Miss’s only loss of this season once his Bulldogs get through playing the Rebels on New Year’s Day night in New Orleans in an all-SEC College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Smart will be trying to beat Ole Miss for the 2nd time and end the Rebels’ magical season, but he knows he can’t beat Kiffin again.

That’s because Kiffin has taken his coaching talents to Baton Rouge and SEC rival LSU, so instead of another Smart-Kiffin coaching showdown in the Big Easy, it’ll be Smart going up against new Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding in the 8 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN. The Sugar Bowl will still have some sweet subplots between the 3rd-seeded Bulldogs and 6th-seeded Rebels, and Smart wasn’t getting caught up in the Kiffin drama during his press conference with reporters on Monday.

He’s just locked in on trying to coach his team to the semifinals, knowing this quarterfinal matchup between 12-1 teams will be tough enough, with or without Kiffin’s presence.

“The offensive coordinator and the staff is still all there,” Kirby Smart said. “They’re not going to make overhauls or make large changes.

“They’re playing at a really high level offensively. Lane has something to do with that, because he helped build it and get them there. But (offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.) has done a tremendous job calling the plays and doing those things.”

So, Kiffin won’t be in New Orleans on New Year’s Day night for this mega matchup. He’s down the road now in Baton Rouge. And Smart knows he and his team will have their hands full regardless in trying to slow down quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and that Ole Miss offense.
