ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A former corrections officer, David Walters, was released on bail after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of Robert Brooks, an incarcerated man from Greece. Walters was released on Dec. 10, 2025.

A judge ruled that Walters did not waive his right to appeal before entering his plea, allowing him to remain free for now.

Prosecutors argued that Walters had admitted guilt and is now second-guessing his decision.

Two other former officers were acquitted, while a third was sentenced to 25 years to life for Brooks’ murder.

Walters’ appeal is still pending.
