For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Enzo Balbuena from Campbell, California, has verbally committed to the admission process* at Cornell University for 2026-27. He wrote on social media:

“I am excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Cornell University to further my academic and swimming career. A huge thank you to my family for being my biggest supporters throughout my entire recruiting process, always encouraging me, keeping me grounded, and believing in me every step of the way. Also thank you to my coaches and teammates at Santa Clara Swim Club for pushing me to where I am today. A big thank you also to the Monarch Family for setting me up for success. Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Wes and Coach Caleb for following me throughout this process and giving me this opportunity. Go Big Red”

Balbuena is a senior at Archbishop Mitty High School. He swims year-round with Santa Clara Swim Club and specializes in back, fly, and IM. As a junior, he won the 100 fly (48.64) and was runner-up in the 100 back (49.85) at the 2025 CIF Central Coast Section Championships in May. A week later, he competed at the California State Meet and finished 5th in the fly (48.65) and 11th in the 100 back (49.32), picking up a PB in the latter. He also notched lifetime bests in the 50 free (21.32) and 50 back (23.46) leading off the 200 free and 200 medley relays.

Balbuena beat three of those times at Winter Juniors West, and added PBs in the 200 free and 200 IM, as well. He placed 22nd in the 200 back and 23rd in the 100 fly and left Austin with new times in the 200 free (1:39.39), 50 back (23.18), 100 back (49.09), 100 fly (48.10), and 200 IM (1:49.36).

Similarly, he wrapped up the 2025 long-course season at Summer Junior Nationals with lifetime bests in the 200 free (1:55.17), 50 back (27.15), 100 back (57.65), 200 back (2:05.86) ,and 50 fly (25.60). He finaled in the 100 back (29th) and 200 back (30th), and finished 56th in prelims of the 50 fly, 42nd in the 100 fly, 68th in the 200 fly, and 71st in the 200 IM.

Balbuena will join Charles Wang, Chengze Duan, Jeremy Ting, Nate Yoon, Nathaniel Malcolm, and Yaron Li in the Big Red class of 2030. His best times would have scored in the ‘C’ finals of the 200 free, 200 back, 100/200 fly, and 400 IM at the 2025 Ivy League Men’s Championships.

Best SCY times:

200 back – 1:45.89 100 back – 49.09 100 fly – 48.10 200 fly – 1:50.00 100 free – 45.17 200 free – 1:39.39 200 IM – 1:49.36 400 IM – 4:02.78

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
