ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The New York Attorney General and others secured a settlement with Mercedes-Benz, worth nearly $150 million, for cheating emission standards and misleading customers, providing millions in compensation to affected New Yorkers.
Mercedes will pay over $13.5 million to affected New York drivers to compensate the vehicle owners and implement excess diesel pollution reforms.
This comes after Attorney General James and a coalition of 50 other officials pushed for bipartisan reforms.
“Mercedes promised New Yorkers clean, green cars, but instead sold vehicles that polluted our air and put public health at risk,” said Attorney General James.
This stems from a 2020 investigation, where a coalition of investigators found that the company used illegal software to cheat emissions tests, allowing vehicles to emit more pollution than allowed.
The investigators found that these devices artificially lowered emissions during government testing. In normal driving conditions, the vehicles emitted far higher levels of pollutants, sometimes up to 30 or 40 times the legal limit.
