So … Tom Brady is Good at This Broadcasting Thing, Eh? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched the game-winning touchdown from the Bears’ Week 16 win against the Packers. But whenever I give it another spin, I notice something new. And in my most recent watch, a thought hit me — Tom Brady is good at this broadcasting thing, eh?

I had my doubts that Tom Brady would be able to cut it as a broadcaster. And after Year 1, I didn’t feel great about how things went overall. There was some good, bad, and indifferent — which was to be expected from a first-time broadcaster. But here we are, deep into Brady’s second season as a FOX broadcaster, and he has taken his game to another level. Based on his history as a player of getting better at stuff with reps, I should have seen this coming. I didn’t. Oops! My bad. But watching Brady improve as a broadcaster has made for some enjoyable moments. I love seeing in-season progress from everyone — players, coaches, and even broadcasters!

Tom Brady has improved considerably as a broadcaster

The biggest difference between this version of Tom Brady and last year’s first go-around is that he is really leaning into his experience. And when you’ve got all those rings, you’ve got plenty of experience to lean into on game day.

Brady finds new ways every week to provide the perspective of what it is going through the minds of quarterbacks in the most important moments. I also enjoy when he forecasts what types of plays are coming up in a given situation. It isn’t the Tony Romo-like thing where he predicts the playcall. But Brady’s explanation of what route concepts need to be used to get a desired result late in games still provides something similar. Plus, I love getting thata peek behind the curtain from someone who knows what needs to happen in the guts of a game. The best analysts have always found a way to inform and educate while not skimping on the entertainment factor.

And it’s not like we’re getting nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and war stories from the trenches from Tom Brady. He isn’t afraid to drop fair criticism. That isn’t new. But what makes it land is that he does it in a way that is insightful and constructive — all without being performative. However, Brady isn’t shy about giving guys their props, which feels rare when so many athletes-turned-broadcasters turn into the Abe Simpson yelling at the cloud meme while ranting about how things were back in their day.

But my favorite Tom Brady development (from a broadcasting perspective) is that he gets excited for big plays in a way that fans do at home:

His interjections during these moments are genuine reactions. And, frankly, they’re relatable. I’ve never been able to relate to Brady. But the closest I’ll get is his “OH!” during DJ Moore’s game-winning catch on Caleb Williams’ perfect throw. That was a real moment of surprise and whimsy from Brady, who made a fair amount of “OH!”-inspiring throws in his career. So to get that from him during games has been fun. I look forward to more of those moments (especially if Chicago’s QB1 is the one delivering them).

Also, I’m diggimng the post-game interviews with the LFG Player of the Game stuff — and not just because Caleb Williams got it this week. Those are some neat conversations between an all-time great player and someone trying to reach that level:

With the Chicago Bears qualifying for the playoffs and the NFC’s postseason games being played on FOX, I imagine that we’ll get to see the broadcast team of Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady again in January. And unlike last year, when I was prepared to give the mute button on my remote a workout, I will be locked in to hear Brady’s quips and commentary on game day. What a difference a year makes.
