The 2026 contest was to have been the 79th consecutive meeting, excluding the COVID-impacted 2020 season, in a series that began in 1926 and was also paused for 3 years during World War II.

Notre Dame leads the USC series 51-37-5, and the Irish hold a 3-game winning streak. They have played for the Jeweled Shillelagh since 1952.

It was also reported that Notre Dame is finalizing a two-year agreement with BYU to play the Cougars in 2026-27. Next year’s game will be in October in Provo, before a return game the next season in South Bend.

Notre Dame and USC have combined to win 24 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophies (8 for USC and 7 for Notre Dame).
