BRISTOL, N.Y. — The country’s top aerial freestyle skiers will compete on Monday at Bristol Mountain, trying to earn a spot on Team USA’s roster ahead of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
The U.S. Selections Freestyle Aerials begins at 6 p.m. The outcome will determine which skiers will get to compete in January’s domestic World Cup events in Lake Placid and in Utah. Those World Cups will determine who qualifies for the Winter Olympics in February.
The competition was originally supposed to be held at Park City, Utah, but it was moved to Bristol Mountain due to unseasonably warm weather. Bristol says it got the venue ready in just three days, thanks to its snowmaking capabilities and crew.
On Sunday, athletes got to train at Bristol and the public was invited to watch. On Monday, there will also be a training session an hour before the competition kicks off. You can see the full schedule here.
Members of the Bristol Mountain Freestyle Team have soared to some great heights. During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Pittsford native Chris Lillis took home a gold medal in the freestyle skiing team event. He also became the youngest male to win the FIS Aerials World Cup.
Back in January, Bristol Mountain also hosted the U.S. Freestyle Aerials National Championship. News10NBC spoke with Bristol’s freestyle skiing coach about how athletes train to soar dozens of feet in the air while doing aerials.
