Wolves Equal Record For Worst Winless Start to a Premier League Season ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Following their loss to Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers have equalled Sheffield United’s record for most games without a win to start a Premier League season.

Most Games Without Winning to Start a Premier League Season

Wolverhampton Wanderers: 17 Games – 2025-26 – Ongoing Sheffield United: 17 Games – 2020-21 Queens Park Rangers: 16 Games – 2012-13 Swindon Town: 15 Games – 1993-94 Newcastle United: 14 Games – 2021-22

It had already been a trying season for Wolves, but after their defeat to Brentford at Molineux on Saturday, they reached a truly unwelcome landmark.

Sheffield United failed to win any of their first 17 games of the 2020-21 Premier League season, which was a competition record. Few people anticipated it would be repeated any time soon, but here we are. Wolves have now also gone 17 without victory at the start of 2025-26.

Also, like the Blades, Wolves have only accrued two points from their 17 games, losing an astonishing 15 times already, along with two draws.

Keane Lewis-Potter scored both goals as Brentford claimed a 2-0 win at Molineux. It might have been different had Jørgen Strand Larsen converted his late penalty, but his spot-kick was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher and the visitors ultimately cruised.

Nevertheless, it would’ve taken a miraculous turnaround for Wolves to avoid equalling the Blades’ record, and they could yet break it.

Frankly, it hasn’t been a particularly unlucky run for Wolves either, outside of their recent 2-1 loss at Arsenal, where they conceded two own goals, including one deep into second-half stoppage time at the Emirates Stadium.

They have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season (9), have conceded the most (37), have been beaten by all three promoted teams, and have now lost 10 in a row in the league, last picking up a league point on 5 October with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton.

Wolves’ only other point this season came in a 1-1 draw at Tottenham, when they were denied victory by a stoppage-time equaliser from João Palhinha.

Their poor start to the season led to Vítor Pereira being sacked after 10 games following a 3-0 loss to Fulham, with Rob Edwards coming in from Middlesbrough to replace him.

There have been signs of improvement in some of their performances under the former Luton Town boss, but Wolves are still looking for their first point under Edwards after seven games.

If they fail to win their next game, Wolves will break the record and officially become the team to have gone the most games without winning to start a Premier League season. That next game is at Anfield, where Edwards’ side will take on reigning champions Liverpool. Arne Slot’s men have hardly had a great season themselves, but it will still be a very big ask to expect Wolves to secure that elusive win there.

They then go to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, who thrashed Wolves 4-1 in the reverse fixture just a couple of weeks ago. Should they still be winless after that, a home game with West Ham on 3 January could be the opportunity they’ve been looking for to finally claim three points.

They did beat the Hammers 3-2 at Molineux in the League Cup second round earlier this season, one of only two wins on all fronts in 2025-26, along with a 2-0 home success against Everton in the third round of the same competition.

While Wolves fans could have taken some solace in the fact Newcastle United failed to win any of their first 14 Premier League games in 2021-22 (D7 L7) and still ended up finishing 11th, no team have ever gone more games without winning and stayed up.

Wolves are one of only four teams to have gone more games without winning to start a Premier League season than that Newcastle side, along with Sheffield United (17 in 2020-21), Queens Park Rangers (16 in 2012-13) and Swindon Town (15 in 1993-94).

In total, they are on a run of 21 Premier League games without a win, having lost three and drawn one of their final four games last season. Their last league victory was a 3-0 home win over Leicester City on 26 April.

It seems inevitable that Wolves will be playing in the Championship next season, regardless of how long it takes to win this season, but we’re sure that doesn’t make their fans any less eager to finally have a reason to punch the air in delight at the final whistle for the first time in eight months.
