Authorities have identified the person who was killed when a driver lost control and crashed into several vehicles earlier this week in west suburban Hillside.
Edward Price, 78, died after being struck near the southwest corner of Butterfield Road and Wolf Road in Hillside at approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday, law enforcement said. Price was killed while crossing the street to enter a parking lot, police said.
The driver then struck a police squad car, continued driving before ultimately striking multiple other vehicles, authorities said. The unidentified driver, who is believed to have lost consciousness, remained hospitalized as of Thursday, law enforcement stated.
Seven others were hospitalized as a result of the crash, including two police officers, authorities said.
The squad car that was struck was stopped at a red light when the crash occurred. Despite being hit, police said the officers leapt into action.
“These two young officers got out of their squad, and ran almost a block after this car that was traveling at a high rate of speed, crashing into multiple other cars,” Police Chief Dan Murphy said. “They ran into the Walgreens. One of them was performing CPR on a pedestrian, and the other was trying to control traffic.”
Video captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed three crashed vehicles with visible damage in the parking lot. Debris could be seen scattered around them, including a crushed walker.
The West Suburban Major Crimes crash team is conducting an investigation.
