Rochester, N.Y. – The Yellow Alert continues into the evening for strong winds and some lake effect snow. Winds have been gusting 40-50 mph across much of the area, with a few isolated gusts of 50-60 mph, including the Rochester Airport. Winds will remain strong with some gusts near 50mph through the first part of Friday night, then they ease significantly. In addition to the wind, there are some areas of lake effect snow east of the lakes. The strong wind will carry the Lake Erie snow band into the Finger Lakes, before weakening and dropping south after midnight. In all, snowfall amounts remain low, with a coating to an inch or two for most, but travel may be slow and slippery within those bands.
Our weather turns much quieter to start the weekend. Saturday will start off chilly with some limited sun, but clouds will move in ahead of our next fast moving clipper. It’ll be a little breezy, but no issues with the wind. We may see a stray shower late in the afternoon or evening as a warm front lifts through, but much of Saturday is dry. A pair of cold fronts move through on Sunday. The first early in the morning, which will drop our temperatures through the 20. Another one moves in late, which will shift the winds and allow some Lake Ontario snow to move in. Once again, accumulations should be fairly minor, but Sunday will be another wintry day with a chilly breeze and some lake flakes.
We’ll continue to see another active weather pattern next week, with a chill on Monday. A warm front lifting through Monday night may bring a period of wet snow, followed by a changeover to wet snow/wintry mix on Tuesday. Another minor accumulation of snow is possible to help whiten things up just a bit. But, we’ll likely look at milder air moving in just in time for Christmas Day, which may melt whatever snow we do get.
