After serving as a Green Beret in the Army and running his own nonprofit for 10 years, a veteran and his family will enjoy the mountain views from their mortgage-free townhouse in Evans.
Scott Wiman and his wife, Ivon Bustos, along with their dog Werewolf, received the keys to their new townhouse in Evans on Wednesday from Operation Homefront. The Texas-based nonprofit worked with U.S. Bank to provide the home to the couple through the Permanent Homes for Veterans program, which works to give mortgage-free homes to veterans.
Wiman and his wife will live mortgage-free for about two years while going to financial counseling and homeowners education classes. Once the couple graduates from the program, they will receive the deed of their home, which will be completely paid off.
Representatives from Baessler Homes, U.S. Bank and Operation Homefront gathered at the home during a welcoming ceremony Wednesday. Baessler Homes, which built the townhouse, also gifted all the furnishing in the home.
Wiman jokingly put on sunglasses as he teared up during the ceremony and thanked everyone for their involvement. Previously, Wiman and Bustos were living in a small apartment in a “not the safest neighborhood” in North Carolina and said his new home is a nice change of pace.
“On behalf of myself and my wife, we are feeling grateful for allowing us to be a part of this veteran housing program and for the better future it will afford us,” Wiman said.

Wiman grew up in Colorado and is happy to be back in the state and close to his family in Arvada. The mortgage-free home will also allow the couple to reallocate funds toward Bustos’ plans to attend nursing school.
“I’m very grateful. Scott is so deserving of everything, and I’m just so proud of everything he’s accomplished,” Bustos said. “He never ceases to amaze me.”

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)As a boy, Wiman was inspired by his great-uncle, who served as a Green Beret in the Vietnam War. Wiman enlisted in 2005. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and selected to serve in Special Forces. He was then deployed to Columbia, where he contracted West Nile virus and was bedridden. Once he recovered, he deployed to Afghanistan again in 2009.
He transitioned out of active-duty service in 2010, and he found adjusting back to civilian life difficult.
“I deeply struggled with the loss of purpose,” Wiman said.
In 2020, he started the nonprofit Call in the Calvary, which aims to support humanitarian projects in Latin America. Through the nonprofit, Wiman, his wife and other nonprofit directors have built a house in Guatemala for a single mother, a greenhouse in Peru, a computer lab in Belize and more.
Running their own nonprofit, Wiman and Bustos know the dedication that goes into such work, and they expressed their gratitude for being gifted a home.

The Permanent Homes for Veterans program is a way for the community to give back to veterans and their families as a thank you for their service, according to Regan Huneycutt, chief revenue officer at Operation Homefront. Since 2012, 690 families have graduated from the program, which has provided more than $106 million on home equity for military families.
“This isn’t just about the house, it’s actually about the program and the transformation that these families go through,” Huneycutt said.
Wiman and Bustos’ home is the fifth donated to the program by U.S. Bank. Tony Cardoza, vice president national builder program manager at U.S. Bank, said being present for the entire process to see a family apply for the program and be selected is an honor.
“This program doesn’t just build homes. It builds hope,” Cardoza said.
