News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

The winter solstice was celebrated early on Friday in Chatsworth at the only nature preserve in the city of Los Angeles. While officially the winter solstice is at 7:03 a.m. Dec. 21 in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power gave a jump start to winter at the 6:55 a.m. sunrise ceremony.

The event began with ceremonial blessings and song by representatives from the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, including Rudy Ortega Jr., Tribal President.

The welcoming ceremony was followed by speakers Nurit Katz, commissioner, Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners; Adam Perez, director of Water Operations, LADWP; Ron Rubine, senior advisor, office of Councilmember John Lee, Council District 12.

Attendees had the rare opportunity on Friday to take a self-guided or a guided nature walk as the LADWP property is only open to the public on special occasions like an Earth Day event in spring. In addition to the walks, there were nature-based booths to explore and the LADWP had customer information available.

The winter solstice — known as the day of the year with the shortest daylight and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere — is, and has been, a date marked by ceremonies and rituals for people around the world, especially at sacred sites aligned with the solstices, such as the famed Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England.

Locally, the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, and also the Chumash, use a sacred winter and summer solstice site at Burro Flats Painted Cave that lies within the Santa Susana Field Laboratory site. However, it is off-limits to the public.

The Chatsworth Nature Preserve, once known locally as the Chatsworth Reservoir, is a 1,325 acre parcel of land owned by the LADWP and is located off of Valley Circle Boulevard and Plummer Street.

The winter solstice event — an apt community outreach for the water and power company — has become a “return of the sun” tradition since 2021 to the December holiday season in the San Fernando Valley.
