North Carolina officials announced Friday that it is extending the application window for its Hurricane Helene single-family home repair program.
The program, part of the state’s Renew NC effort to rebuild homes in western North Carolina, was set to stop accepting applicants on Dec. 31. Now households will have until Jan. 31 to apply, Gov. Josh Stein’s office said.
“We’re extending the application deadline until the end of January to alleviate stress this holiday season and offer more time for homeowners to get their applications in,” Stein said in a news release.
As of Friday, the program has received just shy of 7,000 total applications; just over 5,000 of those are active and eligible.
Secretary of Commerce Lee Lilley, whose department is overseeing the program, said Friday the extension had been frequently requested.
“We got a lot of feedback that people wanted that,” Lilley said. “We’re going to be ambitious to get more people into the program.”
