Sounds Like the Pirates, Rays, and Astros Could Be Getting Together on a Big Three-Way Trade ...Middle East

It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen teams actually be able to complete a really significant three-team deal, but it sure sounds like one is going down today.

The Pirates, the Rays, and the Astros are likely soon getting together on a rather large deal:

If trade is completed, outfielder Jacob Melton and right-hander Anderson Brito would head to the Rays.

Pirates also would receive outfielder Jake Mangum and left-hander Mason Montgomery from Rays t.co/rtx1qbJ2CH

That is a whole lot of player movement. Brandon Lowe, obviously, is a great bat at second base. Jake Mangum is older for a rookie-ish player, but he could be a very capable fourth outfielder on the cheap. And Mason Montgomery is potentially a very high upside lefty reliever or starter. This is a lot of talent going to the Pirates if this happens.

From what we know, they’d be giving up Mike Burrows (a quality young starter, probably worth a fair bit more than Montgomery), and it seems like there would have to be more. The Rays essentially slide in to do some prospect swapping, as they are wont to do.

My main reaction is that I hate to see the Pirates adding a quality bat in Lowe, because, as we’ve said before, all it takes is an average offense for that team to have a chance to compete in the NL Central. It’ll take the young pitching (next to Paul Skenes) really exploding, but they have the talent where it could happen.

As far as the market implications go, I have to think Lowe being moved could be interrelated to other possible moves in the second base market. No, he’s not quite in Ketel Marte’s tier, for example, but Lowe has been a very solid bat for a long time. He would be an upgrade at second base for a lot of teams, and it’s not that difficult to imagine some overlap in interest.

The other big item is the Astros getting Burrows for their rotation, and possibly taking them out of whatever tier of the starting pitcher market they were in. They have Framber Valdez exiting, but it’s never quite been clear to me that they were going to step up to pay him or any of the other yet-remaining upper-tier guys.

More soon.
